Commercial Production of Wild Strawberries
I have heard from many people who have grown alpine strawberries andj they believe that they cannot be commercially grown because the fruit is too small. That is the consensus here in the United States. If you travel across the big pond (the Atlantic Ocean) there is a different opinion. In fact, there is a grower that is now located in Spain who has been growing what they call woodland strawberries for 50 years. They are shipping many here to the US as you will see in their video. Their name is Arzagot. Check out their video on their About Us page.
I will point out one more thing right away. Go to their Home page. You will see an image of what is called a punnet. This is a 100 gram cardboard container that they use for harvesting and shipping the fruit. If you read what is printed on the punnet you will see that it is Fragaria vesca and the cultivar is clearly Reine des Vallees. They call them woodland strawberries. We will have a discussion soon about the names for wild strawberries but these are in fact what I call Alpine Strawberries and I sell seed of this cultivar in my store. Fascinating!!
