Virginia Strawberry - 40+ Seeds
Note Change in Package Size to 40+ Seeds per Packet
Fragaria virginiana originating in Germany and is not a named variety. It is also called the scarlet strawberry. It produces fruit that is somewhat larger than alpine strawberries. The aroma is intense. The flavor is on the tart side. Whether you are a home gardener or a plant breeder you will find this selection to be of interest. The pictures are of a named variety 'Intensity' which we grew here for many years. The selection sold here will be very similar. We will add photos when we have them.
Great plant for naturalizing since the species is native to the U.S. Produces a lot of runners so can be used as an effective ground cover. Is a June bearing type producing a crop in the spring of the second year. It requires chilling to produce flower buds so likely will not produce fruit if grown indoors over winter. Summer shade will aid the plants in survival though they are very hardy to zone 3 with protective mulch.
40+ seeds per packet. No bulk available.
We recommend stratifying the seed by sowing and keeping the media moist. Refrigerate until they start to germinate. Cover to keep media from drying out. Germination is at least 60%+ which is the minimum standard for strawberry seeds. As an alternative, sow in the fall and allow natural temperature variation to stratify the seeds.
Note that some of the pictures are of another selection that we have grown in the past.
