Fragaria viridis
Fragaria viridis, commonly called creamy strawberry or green strawberry is a species native to Europe and central Asia. The seeds sold here originate from Russia but we now save them here in Delaware. We were told the seeds we started out with were collected in the Ural Mountains. In Russian these strawberries are called polunitsa. In Estonian they are called muulukas.
The species is dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required). and is pollinated by Insects.
The fruit are greenish-tinged with red and are sweet and succulent with a rich musky pineapple-like flavor. Absolutely delicious, though they are not produced very freely. They have surprisingly little of the usual strawberry aroma, but a refreshing acidity, and sometimes ripen without becoming red. When they are plucked from the plant, the calyx will usually adhere and they will detach with a noticeable snapping sound.
We have limited quantities but plan to save seeds in the future.
Packet contains $20+ seeds
