Alpine Strawberry 'Reine des Vallees' - About 2800 Seeds
NOTE: 1 gram of seed is about 2800 seeds.
Fragaria vesca 'Reine des Vallees' is grown in Europe by home gardeners and commercial fruit growers. Its name in French means "Queen of the Valleys". Its name in Italian is Regina delle Valli. Whatever the name, this cultivar is THE standard in Europe for alpine strawberries. The major fruit exporting growers in Europe grow this variety exclusively.
Reine des Vallees is a clumping type (produces few to no runners) and is day neutral which means that flowering is not dependent on day length. It is very productive and produces scarlet red fruit with the distinctive wild strawberry flavor and aroma that is expected from fraises des bois.
Please note: This cultivar is not the same as 'Regina'. Reine des Vallees means Queen of the Valleys in French. Translated to Italian it is Regina delle Valli. Regina is available from wholesale seed houses in Europe as a separate cultivar. It is popular in Poland and grown commercially there with no mention of it being the same as Reine des Vallees. Fruit growers in Europe grow Regina for the frozen fruit market.
We are going to try to create charts of germination tests to give growers an idea of what to expect. These tests are done indoors in petri dishes at around 75F with 24/7 lights to optimize germination. Under other situations germination may be more or less with a different pattern. These tests are designed to give a measure of the number of seeds that are viable, not what to expect in other scenarios.

There is a reason it's the standard overseas. The fruit has excellent taste and aroma and the plants are VERY productive. Our years of growing this variety has convinced us that it should be the standard here in the U.S. as well. I rank it ahead of Alexandria in productivity and as good as Mignonette for flavor and aroma.
